Social Action and Community Projects

cap money-newThe running of CAP (Christians Against Poverty) money management courses sprang from the ‘October Walk Out’ and this continues on a regular basis at Upton Vale and also at locations within the community.

The course runs over three sessions, teaching how to order personal finances into a manageable system and how to make well-informed decisions about budgeting, cutting costs, saving and giving. By the end of the course people are empowered to save more, reduce outstanding debts and make better financial decisions.

Places on the courses can be booked by contacting the Church Office on 01803 400403. For more information of our upcoming courses please click here.

Contact the elderly

Throughout the year, Contact the Elderly encourage volunteers to provide a sunday afternoon tea for people who are on their own so that they can get together with other people to have a chat and catch up on old times.

Contact the elderly are always looking for volunteers who would be willing to give up a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon to either drive people to and from a venue locally or people who would be willing to provide a tea in their own home.   This is usually about two or three times per year.

As a volunteer it is a real honour to give up a couple of sunday afternoons per year to transport these people to a home where they can meet with their friends and have a time of chatting and laughter over a lovely tea.

If you feel that you are able to either drive people to a venue or host a sunday afternoon tea a couple of times each year then please contact Sally Sutton on 01626 204375.

Our social action events began in 2010 with the ‘October Walk Out’, part of the vision to work ‘outside the walls’ of our church.

During that month teams from the church were involved in various activities around Torbay ranging from bag packing at the Iceland store in Torquay, in aid of a charity for children with cancer, to site clearance work for a skate park in Hele.

Since that time other events have taken place including the school canteen at Ellacombe Primary School. Many are ongoing, involving ‘tidy ups’ in the community. These events have been run in conjunction with other local agencies mainly in the Hele and Watcombe areas; gardens have been cleared, old furniture and white goods removed and lots of chats have taken place with local residents.
